an attraction to uncharted spaces led me to begin photographing at night. ‘land of sunshine’ investigates the experience of urban california landscapes after dark. i am interested in conveying the idea of darkness and the feeling of looking into the night, more so than exploiting the camera’s ability to transform an invisible world. my photographs embrace absence, giving space and inviting time to reflect on the ordinary urban spaces, challenging the belief that detailed photographs equate to a greater understanding of place. the original platinum prints invite contemplation and afford an open interpretation of the content. darkness transforms a familiar landscape from something recognizable and known into something felt and seen. it is a wonderful time to practice the power of looking.
through photography my goal is to reveal things which take time to witness, and are generally overlooked. we live in an age that compresses time and values immediacy, to which i seek a prolonged alternative.
