Life on the most southernmost Islands of Japan has ancient animistic roots. This connection between the natural and spiritual worlds creates a complex understanding and respect for all life.
My interest was to work with the gravitational pull of the moon, to create tactile textiles by which the inner life of the natural world and its ways of interacting with humans comes to surface. By following the rituals, festivals through dance, song and prayers that align the Islanders with the natural world.
All these practices denote a deep sense of respect for the environment, and the natural order, the relationship between all things embedded in an infinite process of change. The resulting works follow the rhythm of vocal emissions and the vibration of the natural world in an attempt to tune into this cosmic vibration.
This project was made possible with the generous support of the Mondriaan Fund
