History and society celebrate winners. It is they who are remembered, pictured, centered. Losing, a far more common event for the vast majority of us, is rarely depicted. These images, from which everyone except the losing boxer have been removed, demonstrate the poignancy of defeat. They reveal the sculptural inelegance of failure and ask us to consider this most human of acts. These images subvert the comfort we find in depictions of success, instead asking us to dwell on the uncomfortable commonality of defeat.
